Implications of complexity and uncertainty for integrated modelling and impact assessment in river basins

چکیده
The paper focuses on implications of uncertainty in climate change impact assessment at the river basin and regional scales. The study was performed using the process-based ecohydrological spatially distributed model SWIM (Soil and Water Integrated Model). The model integrates hydrological processes, vegetation/crop growth, erosion and nutrient dynamics in river basins. It was developed from the SWAT and MATSALU models for climate and land use change impact assessment. The study area is the German part of the Elbe River basin (about 100.000 km). It is representative for semi-humid landscapes in Europe, where water availability during the summer season is the limiting factor for plant growth and crop yield. The validation method followed the multi-scale, multi-site and multi-criteria approach and enabled to reproduce (a) water discharge and nutrient load at the river outlet along with (b) local ecohydrological processes like water table dynamics in subbasins, nutrient fluxes and vegetation growth dynamics at multiple scales and sites. The uncertainty of climate impacts was evaluated using comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation experiments.

Case study Malaysia: Spatial water quality assessment of Juru, Kuantan and Johor River Basins using environmetric techniques
This study investigates spatial water quality assessment of selected river basins in the three different states in Malaysia. Environmetric techniques namely, cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA), were applied to study the spatial variations of the most significant water quality variables in order to determine the origin of pollution sources ...
متن کاملUncertainty in environmental risk assessment: implications for risk-based management of river basins.
Environmental risk assessment is typically uncertain due to different perceptions of the risk problem and limited knowledge about the physical, chemical, and biological processes underlying the risk. The present paper provides a systematic overview of the implications of different types of uncertainty for risk management, with a focus on risk-based management of river basins. Three different ty...
متن کاملAssessment and Calibration of the Curve Number Method (SCS-CN) for Estimating Runoff in the Aras Sub-basins, North West of Iran
The SCS-curve number is one of the common methods to estimate drirect runoff in the watershed scale. There is often an uncertainty in predicting runoff in many areas due to to the model’s assumption on the initial abstraction ratio (l= 0.20). This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of SCS-CN method in estimating runoff in some semi-arid subbasins of the Aras river consits of the Livar...
متن کاملFuture climate change impact on hydrological regime of river basin using SWAT model
Hydrological components in a river basin can get adversely affected by climate change in coming future. Manipur River basin lies in the extreme northeast region of India nestled in the lesser Himalayan ranges and it is under severe pressure from anthropogenic and natural factors. Basin is un-gauged as it lies in remote location and suffering from large data scarcity. This paper explores the imp...
متن کاملStructural uncertainty assessment in a discharge simulation model
A major goal in hydrological modelling is to identify and quantify different sources of uncertainty in the modelling process. This paper analyses the structural uncertainty in a streamflow modelling system by investigating a set of models with increasing model structure complexity. The models are applied to two basins: Kielstau in Germany and XitaoXi in China. The results show that the model st...
